The Ebenezer Howard School of Planning is uniquely located near the world’s first Garden City – Letchworth.

About the program

The MSc Sustainable Planning  is accredited by The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and is offered through a blended learning approach, combining a face-to-face teaching and tutorials approach with virtual live teaching, access to learning materials and online submission of assignments. Students will learn the role planning plays in addressing, and solve key sustainability concerns, including climate change, urban sprawl, social cohesion, and demands for personal mobility. Students also get to use the latest techniques including GIS; urban design tools and community engagement techniques such as charrettes.

Benefiting from a wide range of modules, students can choose between three pathways: MSc Sustainable Planning, MSc Sustainable Planning and Environmental Management and MSc Sustainable Planning and Transport. A master’s degree (honours degree with a minimum classification of second class – 2.2) in any subject is sufficient to apply for this program. Courses are worth 180 CATS (equivalent to 90 ECTS) and the student is awarded a MSc degree upon completing the studies.

The program has a geographical perspective, e.g. urban planning, rural development or public spaces.

Interdisciplinary

The program stands out by combining different sciences or approaches with the aim of giving to the student deeper understanding of the subject of study.

Society

The program emphasizes the human dimension of the built environment, e.g. participatory processes or inclusive designs.

Business & Management

The program addresses how to organize architectural and spatial infrastructures or processes, either for private or public actors.

Materials

The program explores (certain) building materials and/or technical circularity processes.

Digitalisation & Technology

The program emphasizes the technological aspects of the built environment, e.g. BIM, robotics or digitalisation.
