This PhD position focuses on the crucial role of existing buildings in achieving a sustainable built environment by 2050. Energy-efficient renovations of these buildings not only reduce energy consumption and emissions but also enhance environmental sustainability, affordability, and well-being. However, current policies and energy codes primarily address energy reduction, neglecting the broader social and environmental impacts. This research aims to develop a comprehensive framework for assessing the social and environmental performance of energy-efficient renovations in residential buildings. The assessment will consider factors such as habitability, affordability, and accessibility, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative research methods, including Life Cycle Assessment and Social Life Cycle Assessment. Surveys will be conducted within local communities and authorities to gather data, and simulation software and case studies will be employed to test the assessment framework. Ultimately, the research aims to provide clarity on the social and environmental impacts of energy-efficient renovations and establish a novel assessment framework for these projects
