We are looking for creative minds and critical thinkers to join our team in the effort to address climate change in a systemic way. We are calling for applications for the following position:
(SENIOR) RESEARCHER ‘CARBON ACCOUNTING OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT’ (F/M/D) (FULL-TIME)
BACKGROUND: Starting March 2023, Bauhaus Earth will implement the three-year research project ‘Transformation Pathways toward a Regenerative Built Environment’, funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV). The project examines the potentials, challenges, and intervention points for the transition towards bio-based and circular buildings and green, inclusive, and healthy urban environments. A core aim of the project is to conduct an integrated global study to assess the potential of biogenic materials to address future construction demands and to identify the detailed potential of the built environment as a human-made carbon sink. Four in-depth case studies in Germany, Bhutan, Indonesia, and South Africa will complement the global study. They will capture the complexity and local specificities of systemic transformation challenges and possible pathways towards a regenerative built environment. The case studies will be designed as ‘Transformation Labs’ using a transdisciplinary and transformative research approach.
DESCRIPTION OF THE ROLE: You will mainly work on the three-year inter- and transdisciplinary research project and at the same time be responsible for research on the transformation theme ‘Carbon Accounting of the Building Environment’. You will be part of a project team of approx. 10-12 researchers and other collaborators.
Your areas of activity include, but are not limited to:
- Systematic review of current carbon and greenhouse gas emission accounting methods for the built environment.
Assess greenhouse gas emission reduction potentials of bio-based and circular building materials.
- Investigate whole-life cycle greenhouse gas emissions from bio-based and circular buildings in the four case study regions, considering both embodied emission and operational emissions.
- Develop carbon and greenhouse gas flow model for the built environment.
- Support the development of a research methodology for co-creative transformation labs.
- Support the development of scenarios and roadmaps for transformation towards a regenerative built environment in the case study regions.
- Contribute to internal knowledge management, research synthesis, scientific publications, and reports.
- Engage in the development of targeted capacity-building formats.
- In addition to the contribution to the above-mentioned research project we expect candidates to develop independent concepts and lead on additional funding initiatives to expand Bauhaus Earth’s research portfolio, team, and competencies to develop enabling frameworks and tools for systemic change of the building sector.
- Master’s degree or PhD in sustainability sciences, environmental sciences, environmental modelling, data analysis, geoInformation, or another relevant subject.
- Experience in the field of carbon, greenhouse gas emission, or sustainability accounting or life-cycle assessment including inter-/transdisciplinary and international research projects.
- Solid (international) experience in modelling and analyzing carbon flow and greenhouse gas emissions across different phases of buildings, from material production to end-of-life
- Proven programming and data analysis skills (at least one of the following: R, Python)
- Experience in working with supply chain data, including multi regional input-output models
- Experience in supervising Bachelor’s and Master’s students
- Experience in science communication as well as scientific publishing.
- Strong analytical skills, profound strategic and interdisciplinary thinking, strong teamwork skills and a structured way of working.
- Willingness to travel abroad and within Germany.
- Fluency in English with excellent written and oral communication skills; basic German skill are welcome but not required.
- Work experience in Germany, South Africa, Indonesia, or Bhutan is an advantage.

- The position is initially limited until December 2025, a continuation is sought. – Renumeration is based on the requirements of the collective bargaining agreement of the federal states (TV-L 13 Brandenburg) with a working time of 36-40 hours/week.
The working locations are Berlin and Potsdam.
