NTNU is a broad-based university with a technical-scientific profile and a focus on professional education. The university is located in three cities with headquarters in Trondheim.

The faculty of Architecture and Design, NTNU, is looking for committed, curious and ambitious candidates who want to take a PhD in architecture or design. The period of employment is three years, with the possibility of a fourth year related to teaching or other relevant assignments.

The need for transition increases in line with the growing complexity of societal challenges. This applies to issues such as the climate crisis and loss of natural diversity, increasing social and economic inequalities, migration, demographic changes and public health. The ability to change is closely linked to innovation and creativity.

Applicants are invited to present a research proposal on how architecture and/or design practice engages in societal change and sustainable transition of cities and communities. We call for proposals that focus on the development of creative and critical methods approaching complex societal challenges. The research should explore how architecture and/or design may be drivers for change. It should contribute to further positioning of the AD faculty within a potential future interdisciplinary program at NTNU level on creative methods and approaches to innovation (NTNU Create). The PhD programmes at the faculty opens for diverse methodological approaches, included practice-based research.

You will:

  • develop and carry out a research project
  • carry out coursework that contains professional and methodological training at doctoral level
  • present own research work at national and international scientific conferences
  • write and defend a PhD dissertation
