Building beyond Borders

About the institution

Building Beyond Borders is a cross-border learning platform to enhance knowledge and push action towards regenerative and distributive design and building processes, located at the Faculty of Architecture and Arts at Hasselt University.

About the program

Building upon academic knowledge of co-creation and participatory processes, the participants concretize their role in designing and realizing a real-life project while collaborating with local stakeholders, craftsmen, multidisciplinary experts and professionals. Every bi-annual postgraduate programme has a unique focus. The programme unravels in four modules: Theory & Reflect sessions, Hands-on atelier, Research & Design studio and Building project.

Besides weekly one-day classroom sessions, 3-day and 5-day workshop weeks are organized throughout the year.  A four-week construction site internship is part of the programme. The overall program starts every two years, with a year of post-graduate studies, and a symposium and a workshop in the years between. The maximum number of participants is 25.
