This PhD project aims to develop, pilot, and evaluate innovations in inclusive community-led Place Plan development using participatory action research. Partnering with Cardiff Council and community organizations, the research will create a framework for Place Plans to be adopted as Supplementary Planning Guidance for Cardiff’s Local Development Plan.

Building on Cardiff University Community Gateway’s decade-long research and partnerships.
Addressing community and public sector research aims.
Supervised by Prof. Mhairi McVicar and Simon Gilbert, Cardiff Council’s Head of Planning.

Research questions will explore best practices in community involvement, challenges, and the impact of participatory action research on quality, equity, and sustainability in Place Plans.

Methods include literature reviews, Place Plan analysis, and mapping community initiatives in Cardiff to innovate community involvement methods and develop a place plan template.

Candidates should hold a relevant undergraduate degree (2:1 or equivalent) and meet English language requirements. The PhD starts in October 2024, January 2025, or April 2025. Applications, including a CV and research proposal, are due by 23 August 2024 via the online portal, SIMS. The studentship covers UK rate fees and a stipend, with international applicants covering the fee difference.
