The research group Local Environment Management and Analysis (LEMA) at the University of Liege is seeking a doctoral candidate for a European project on Decarbonizing Urban Blocks (DECUB), which focuses on circular urban regeneration.

LEMA has over 30 years of experience in research on local environments, combining computer modeling with social methods. The group comprises 3 professors, 3 senior researchers, and 10 international PhD candidates, with a strong track record in collaborative research involving academic, governmental, and community partners.

The DECUB project addresses sustainable urban regeneration at the block level, integrating strategies related to decarbonization, circular economy, and community engagement. The candidate will work on tasks including identifying urban archetypes across European cities, conducting Material Flow Analysis (MFA) and Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) on transformation scenarios, and collaborating with research units and cities in Living Labs to assess urban interventions.

Applicants should hold a master’s degree in urban planning, geosciences, geography, computer science, or related fields. Strong English communication skills are essential, and proficiency in programming is preferred.

The position offers a tax-free monthly allowance of approximately 2,300 € for up to 4 years, with access to cutting-edge research facilities. Applications should be sent a CV, transcripts, and references. The selection process begins December 1, 2024, with an expected start date in January 2025.
