About the institution
Building Beyond Borders is a cross-border learning platform to enhance knowledge and push action towards regenerative and distributive design and building processes, located at the Faculty of Architecture and Arts at Hasselt University.
About the program
Building upon academic knowledge of co-creation and participatory processes, the participants concretize their role in designing and realizing a self-designed real-life project while collaborating with local stakeholders, craftsmen, multidisciplinary experts and professionals. Every bi-annual postgraduate programme has a unique focus.
The programme builds its foundations in three parallel and interconnected tracks: hands-on ateliers, the material exploration and innovation lab and a series of reflective sessions. Simultaneously and intertwined with the tracks, the team of students gives form to the project, for and with the local community.
A building festival, the realization of the proposed interventions, and creative documentation in the form of a magazine and a short film are the fruits of your journey.
Besides weekly one-day classroom sessions, 3-day and 5-day workshop weeks are organized throughout the year. A four-week construction site internship is part of the programme. The overall program starts every two years, with a year of post-graduate studies, and a symposium and a workshop in the years between.
Participants who succeeded the entire programme are awarded an official postgraduate certificate ‘Building Beyond Borders’. In case the participant does not hold a master degree, a certificate permanent education ‘Building Beyond Borders’ is awarded.
The maximum number of participants is 25.
