Integrated Urbanism & Sustainable Design

About the institution

The programms experiential learning hubs are based at the University of Stuttgart (German: Universität Stuttgart), a public research university located in Germany, and at Ain Shams University (Arabic: جامعة عين شمس), a public university located in Cairo, Egypt. The labs are embedded into a network of international partner institutions and universities around the world.

About the program

The double-degree program Integrated Urbanism & Sustainable Design with the first year at Stuttgart University and the second year at Ain Shams University in Cairo equips students with conceptual and practical tools to develop holistic (rather than purely technology-oriented) approaches towards sustainable urban planning — combining environmental and social approaches to urban transformation and addressing aspects of participatory planning and building, energy-efficient construction, integrated aspects of landscape and infrastructure planning, urban management and governance.

The program takes 4 semesters to complete and is worth 120 ECTS. Through collaboration with the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service/ Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) scholarships are available.

Both universities also offer the IUSD as a single degree program in both locations, with different study and exchange opportunities.
