Northumbria University is inviting applications from enthusiastic individuals interested in pursuing a fully-funded PhD project titled “Examining the impacts of human factors on carbon emissions in sustainable buildings.” Supervised by Dr. Cheng Siew Goh and Professor Richard Laing, the project aims to investigate the influence of key human factors on the performance of sustainable buildings and evaluate their impact on the overall carbon emissions throughout the buildings’ lifespan. The research will explore the broader implications of various human factors, such as needs, expectations, and interests, on the design and performance of sustainable buildings.

While carbon emissions are commonly used to assess sustainable building performance, this project uniquely addresses the often-overlooked social dimension of human interventions. By bridging the gap between the social dimension (human factors) and the environmental dimension (carbon emissions), the study aims to provide valuable insights for stakeholders, fostering proactive engagement in achieving sustainable development targets.

The anticipated outcomes of this research include contributing to the future development of sustainable buildings by integrating human factors into the planning and design processes. Additionally, the study aims to promote interdisciplinary research at the intersection of sustainability studies, building technology, psychology, and behavioral science. Prospective PhD students are encouraged to apply and become part of this innovative and impactful research endeavor at Northumbria University.
